Quotes -“It’s a beautiful thing, the Destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn’t only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word, which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. Take ‘good,’ for instance. If you have a word like ‘good,’ what need is there for a word like ‘bad’? ‘Ungood’ will do just as well – better, because it’s an exact opposite, which the other is not. Or again, if you want a stronger version of ‘good,’ what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like ‘excellent’ and ‘splendid’ and all the rest of them? ‘Plusgood’ covers the meaning or ‘doubleplusgood’ if you want something stronger still. Of course we use those forms already, but in the final version of Newspeak there’ll be nothing else. In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by only six words – in reality, only one word. Don’t you see the beauty of that, Winston? It was B.B.’s idea originally, of course,” he added as an afterthought. -Syme

-“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten

  • But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.
  • A speaker who uses that kind of phraseology has gone some distance toward turning himself into a machine.
  • The appropriate noises are coming out of his larynx, but his brain is not involved, as it would be if he were choosing his words for himself.
  • In our time it is broadly true that political writing is bad writing.
  • You can shirk it by simply throwing your mind open and letting the ready-made phrases come crowding in. The will construct your sentences for you — even think your thoughts for you, to a certain extent
Can link across by saying that because of nineteen eighty four I am now more aware and able to see how this is used to even sway the readers/viewers opinion  The visual language is used to also manipulate us. Minority report highlights its not that state we should be worried about its the multinational organisations and company’s only looking for a economic advantage.

“It’s a beautiful thing, the Destruction of words”

All of us associate with language, use language and have an existence in a society we need language, it is the way to express our thoughts. Everyday we communicate through language to others to express instructions opionions thoughts questions it is our way to prove  Just like we use language to express our thoughts we fail to recognise how actually language is able to restrict our thought.

“Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?” Take ‘good,’ for instance. If you have a word like ‘good,’ what need is there for a word like ‘bad’? ‘Ungood’

not only is the slogans .

Take ‘good,’ for instance. If you have a word like ‘good,’ what need is there for a word like ‘bad’? ‘Ungood’ will do just as well”

The primary aim of modern warfare (in accordance with the principles of
DOUBLETHINK, this aim is simultaneously recognized and not recognized by
the directing brains of the Inner Party) is to use up the products of the
machine without raising the general standard of living.

The Ironey in the statememnt This is the first point that  The Ministry of Truth has created such a state where all party members are

the as we discover the platform is used to spread the states propaganda and opinions that it wants its citizens to know at that moment. This idea is close to heart for Orwell being a writer, he chooses to exploit and exaggerate how the media must misinform its citizens depending on the states wants, and all the state wants is for citizens to think they are solving problems and keeping them safe. History books, old newspapers, all literature is rewritten daily to match what problems The Party is currently claiming to face all to make sure the citizens don’t realise they are just being used by The Party. Not having the ability to reflect upon what you just read is true leaves you in doubt but eventually you have no choice but to believe what you are told because you have no evidence to prove otherwise. Orwell displays how the Newspeak language can only exist because of this idea through The Party’s slogan, “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength”. Deliberately Orwell uses these paradox statements to show the extent of which the citizens have failed to understand the true meanings of the words, they don’t understand the language anymore so are fooled into “double thinking”. They believe that when Oceania is at war it is also in peace at the same time, two contradictory statements that would be challenged had rational thinking not been eliminated through the inability to verify facts. Orwell wants us to see how one state controlling the media will limit the language used which then as a result limits the thoughts of citizens because they don’t have the language anymore to express otherwise. Winston understands that this is the plan… “Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?”. Any communication that is to take place in Airstrip One should limit its self to the strict orthodox of The Party by destroying words any ability to express unorthodox ideas is not possible. This is all a part of the aim to manipulate the thoughts of citizens to allow The Party to remain in power. Orwell has used a strong example to highlight the issue of how the being in power of the media allows the control over the language and hereby you can oppress the thoughts of viewers and readers
